Top Films (in random order):
Argo
Lincoln
Silver Linings Playbook
Moonrise Kingdom
Django Unchained (I only put this on the list because it was a lot of fun, and it spared no expense to make us laugh)
We Need to Talk About Kevin
Compliance
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Zero Dark Thirty
Oslo, August 31
Rust and Bone
Amour
Life of Pi was good and very groundbreaking visually, but in my opinion, not one of the best films of the year.
A few that I very much enjoyed, but couldn't possibly be top films of the year included:
Cabin in the Woods - So much fun
The Perks of Being a Wallflower - Fantastic screenplay
Seven Psychopaths - Great performances by all
Top Performances:
Joaquin Phoenix in The Master
Quvenzhane Wallis in Beasts of the Southern Wild
Marion Cotillard in Rust and Bone
Daniel Day-Lewis in Lincoln
Rachel Weisz in The Deep Blue Sea
Ann Dowd in Compliance
Tilda Swinton in We Need to Talk About Kevin
Jessica Chastain in Zero Dark Thirty
Christophe Waltz in Django Unchained (although he is playing the same role in every film now, as entertaining as it is)
Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook (although she can never outdo her role in Winter's Bone)
Worst Films of the Year
Hyde Park on Hudson: It was a "who cares" story with a creepy turn by Bill Murray as a womanizing/stamp-collecting FDR. One boring weekend in the country does not an interesting story make.
The Words: Such a bad script it was laughable. I actually laughed. More snorted, or chortled.
The Hobbit: In my opinion, Peter Jackson is now just catering to 12-year-old boys. It's too bad because I really wanted to like this one, but he's gone a little CG crazy, and I felt like Bilbo Baggins was a one-note.
The Big Picture: OMG the lengths this idiot goes to.
Prometheus: Le huh?
The Raven: John Cusack was wasted on this stupid movie.
Looper: It should have been good, but it was not. And Joseph Gordon Levitt's face was all messed up.
