Best Movies of 2013

It's that time of year again. That glorious holiday season where the weather is cold, the days are short, and movie theaters are busting at the seams with good films to get out before the cut-off for Oscar nominations on December 31.

This is the list thus far of the best movies of the year. I'll be updating it as I see more.

Best film of the year, perhaps best film since "Beasts of the Southern Wild" goes to the Belgian masterpiece, "The Broken Circle Breakdown." This heartbreaking piece of filmmaking doesn't follow the rules, nor does the idea make a lot of sense, but it works. Majestically so. It's a beautiful tale of love, loss, and bluegrass.

Second best film of the year goes to the little film by David Lowery, "Ain't Them Bodies Saints." Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara have an intense chemistry and have proven themselves as forces to contend with. This film will break your heart.

I'm probably going to be in the minority here for not placing this at the very top of the list, but in my opinion, it doesn't hold a candle to the previous two films. But it's good. It doesn't try to glamorize an otherwise very unglamorous time in American history. It's painful and ugly at times, which it needs to be. The acting is stellar by all involved.
